Susanna Hoffs – Someday
Baroque Folk

Rating: B

Susanna Hoffs is best known as the singer and guitarist of pop group the Bangles. Now, a few years older, and wiser, and Hoffs has returned with a new album titled Someday. Don’t expect to be walking like an Egyptian, or getting all stressed out because it’s Monday, when you listen to this collection of songs. In fact, if your Monday is manic then Someday may be just what you need to calm down and refocus.

Susanna sings like an angel on this album of emotional songs. The album is very 1960’s oriented and one can swear when listening to “November Sun” that this girl is a huge Donovan fan. “Regrets” is one of the best on the album as Hoffs opens up and gets gut-level honest with both the lyrics and music. “One Day” would have been a great Mamas and Papas hit while “Raining” could have been written by Jim Croce.

Hoffs has proven herself as a songwriter with this album. Sure, she can also write great pop music, and she is still cute as a bug, but with Someday she graduates from Top 40, MTV videos, where she walks funny, to an emotional, and insightful, artist.
This one is mellow and rooted in the past but, that said, there is a freshness about it that fits like a comfortable pair of slippers on a relaxing Sunday morning.
