The Guess Who – The Future is What It Used to Be

This is not your father's Guess Who. There is no Randy Bachman nor Burton Cummings. Only the drummer remains and no one even knows his name. Plus...how weird is it that metal master bassist Rudy Sarzo is in this band? WTF?
The Guess Who you know and love is gone...it is now this. Surprisingly, however, they are good. Live, in fact, they rock. They have a great show and the songs to knock your socks off. In the studio, where one would think it is sacrilege to record under this moniker without those two famous faces...they actually pull off a strong album.
It is not “American Woman” or “No Time” but what the hell...they did a nice job. Truth be told it is unlikely I will ever listen to this album again...or if I was not given it to review I would have bothered ever checking it out at all. That said...I am glad I did, as it is a good rock album that hearkens back to the time the Guess Who ruled the world. Tommy Show of Styx sings background vocals on several songs to boot.
The Guess Who are not reinventing the wheel nor re-writing their hits...but they are surviving in a complicated rock n roll environment. This band lineup is strong and they wrote a nice album, which is much more than most classic bands still out there slogging it out on the road can say.
