Rating: B
On December 31, 2015 in their hometown of L.A. at the sold out Staples Center arena, Mötley Crüe said goodbye after a 35 year love affair as the baddest boys in rock ‘n’ roll.
The band may actually mean it too, unlike many of their contemporaries... notably, in January of 2014, Mötley Crüe signed a binding legal document known as "cessation of touring" agreement, preventing them from touring under the band's name past the year 2015. So, as far we can tell, this really was The End.
They went out with a huge bang, just as expected... (nothing to do with Pamela Anderson). Before we brag about the show, we will admit the obvious… Vince struggles terribly at times, vocally. He just is not a good singer anymore. Short of breath, can’t hit the notes like when he was young, possibly using tracks to bolster his voice or background vocals, and using scantily clad women on stage to divert your attention from the painfully obvious... and the ever annoying trick of holding the mic toward the audience so they can sing along – so you don’t have to. Sorry Vince… not like this is the first time you’ve ever heard that criticism. Other than Tommy Lee, Crüe are not known for their top notch musicianship. But… what a hard rock attitude…what a legend they have built… and they have written some bad-ass rockers over the years despite not being blessed with the best musical skillset to ever land in Los Angeles. Plus, they nailed a TON of chicks….
This show is freakin’ amazing visually. The pyro was never more bombastic. Nikki Sixx blasted fire from his bass 30 feet into the air and Tommy Lee’s drums went on a literal rollercoaster ride! Vince and Nikki floated above the crowd in cherry-pickers and fans were bawling while the band played “Home Sweet Home” to end the show. This really was the end of an era. The Blu-Ray is stellar and the bonus interviews are kick-ass. The band members open up in separate interviews and discuss all things Crue openly and honestly… including the final show.
Love ‘em or hate ‘em, no one can deny the impact they left on rock ‘n’ roll. They may be gone but that slimy, greasy, nasty, smelly but ‘oh so cool’ looking stain they left is going to be there forever.
