Eagle Rock Entertainment has been doing a bang-up job of releasing archive material by The Rolling Stones, in new and exciting ways. This time around it comes from their 1995 Stripped Tour. The package is available in many formats including a DVD or SD Blu-ray containing the newly-revised documentary of the same name, or on DVD+CD or DVD+LP featuring the documentary and single CD / 2LPs compiled from live shows [Cat Nos EREDV1224 / ERSBD3024 / EAGDV055 / ERDVLP090]. Additionally, a DVD or SD Blu-ray deluxe edition is available, packaged with a 60 page hard book set containing 5 discs.
This tour saw the band going deep into their catalog and playing some of their favorite tracks. The Stones hardcore fans were just as delighted. The band’s performances reveal their jubilation. Reviewed here is the Deluxe Edition which contains a CD and three DVDs featuring three live concerts, plus a band documentary DVD while on tour.
The band members were settling into their iconic status by the mid-nineties and were relaxing and having fun... the previous decade saw them on top of their game at the beginning of the run, and disjointed by the end. Stripped was a true injection of energy, passion and fun for the band and fans alike. When the album was first released, Mick Jagger stated the theory behind the recording, “Take the best element from [MTV] ‘Unplugged’, the intimate thing of it, without actually doing it completely unplugged.” That is what makes this cool—it was not an acoustic show, yet it was The Stones just being The Stones, stripping it down and taking it easy and bringing that Stones cool image back to the rock scene.
The CD’s live selections were taken from Amsterdam, Paris and London and feature the bluesy side of the band with songs like “Not Fade Away” and “Honky Tonk Woman.” Fan favorite “Dead Flowers” and “Faraway Eyes” show their country influence… and then there is the rocking side the band is best known for. “Miss You,” “Brown Sugar,” “Midnight Rambler,” “Rip this Joint,” “Gimme Shelter” and “Street Fighting Man” are all must-hear live versions for any Stones fanatic. The remake of the Bob Dylan classic “Like a Rolling Stone” is very cool, and fitting for this band to trot out as well.
Of course, the most exciting items in the deluxe package are the three live concert discs. Check out the track listing below and tell me that you don’t wanna, stop, click play and sit back and rock? Don’t miss Disc 1, the documentary… see, this damn thing just gets better and better.
So… quit reading, and go buy this and have a Rolling Stones Stripped-down kinda weekend… I’m going to… again. And again… and again!
