Back in 1973, a band from Jacksonville, Florida with a funny name took the world of rock ‘n’ roll by storm. Lynyrd Skynyrd was the band that the album was called Pronounced ‘Lĕh-‘nérd ‘Skin’nérd. The following year, 1974, saw the band release their follow-up titled Second Helping as the band quickly became the leaders of the Southern Rock genre.
Earlier this year, the band went back to Jacksonville for two nights with two special concerts. They recorded this event at the Florida Theater and played each of their first two albums in their entirety. The band recorded both shows and put them together for this amazing Blu-Ray.
Johnny Van Zant, the band’s vocalist, and brother of original singer Ronnie Van Zant, had this to say about the experience, “We’ve been wanting to go back and recreate these live records for a long time,” he explained. “We decided to come back to our hometown, Jacksonville, and play at the legendary Florida Theatre.”
All one has to do is take a peep at the songs that were on the first two Skynyrd albums to start drooling. “Free Bird,” “Simple Man,” “Tuesday’s Gone,” “I Ain’t the One,” “Sweet Home Alabama,” “Don’t Ask Me No Questions,” “Workin’ for MCA,” “The Ballad of Curtis Loew,” “Needle and the Spoon” and “Call Me the Breeze” are all performed here.
The tunes are also performed well. While many of the original members no longer roam the earth, today’s Lynyrd Skynyrd do a damn fine job of keeping the legacy alive and well.
In addition to footage from the shows, there is behind-the-scenes bonus footage as well. This one will have you smiling from ear-to-ear for the two hours it takes to watch it!
