We have all read about the health issues of the metal god that only needs one name, Motorhead’s Lemmy. It appears time and copious amounts of chemicals are starting to catch up with the iconic musician. That said, he is not letting his personal issues affect his studio performance. With Bad Magic, Motorhead has done it again! This is an album of pure, unadulterated punk rock meets three-chord metal with all focus on the man with the mole.
Lemmy sounds a tad older in spots... but fuck man, he is older. The fact that he is walking and talking and mostly coherent at all is a miracle. Lemmy is the only man on the planet that Keith Richards looks at and thinks, “Dude, that man can party!” Not only is Lemmy still pushing the bottom end loudly and pumping out that razor blade shredded voice, he is crafting songs with his band mates that are every bit Motorhead as anything Motorhead has ever done.
This one is loud, greasy and smells bad... but it sounds so good! The beginning track, “Victory or Die” is punk rock/metal mayhem. The band is on fire from the opener to the album closer, a song that was seemingly written for Lemmy to remake it… The Rolling Stones classic Sympathy for the Devil.
Lemmy may have actually allowed age to slow these tunes down, but just a second or two, compared to his 1980s output... but truth be told, that only makes the album more listenable, proving -as Lemmy has lamented since the bands inception in the 1970s- that Motorhead is just a rock ‘n’ roll band, after all.
