Eddie Money returned to the studio after the let down of 1983’s Where’s the Party and regrouped, bringing in producer Richie Zito in hopes of striking Gold and Platinum once again. It worked.
Zito understood The Money-Man’s mission, and helped Eddie craft tunes in the style of his earlier works. Zito was a well respected producer, having worked in the studio previously with major acts such as Cheap Trick, Bad English, Heart and the Cult. Zito got Money to hold nothing back as he helped him ship over a million units of Can’t Hold Back. Money was, ahem... back in the money!
Money hit pay dirt with the song “Take Me Home Tonight” featuring guest vocalist Ronnie Spector. The video was all over MTV, and Eddie Money’s famous rasp was all over the airways saying, “Just like Ronnie said…” while Ronnie answered with her sexy ‘oh, oh oh’s.’ The song single-handedly returned Money back from the brink of disaster, reaching #4 on the singles chart.
Remember, back in the year 1986, the industry was not particularly friendly to pop acts like Money, as Hair-Bands were the ‘big thing.’ Still, Money was not satisfied with one hit-single. He released the hit song “Endless Nights” as well as another tune that will forever be associated with Money, the nostalgic “I Wanna go Back.”
Money would continue to release hit songs for the next few years, but never again would he reach the same heights of success as the earlier days.
Rock Candy has released Can’t Hold Back as a Special Deluxe Collector’s Edition, with fully remastered sound, a 12-page full color booklet, including new interviews, a 3,000 word essay, enhanced artwork and rare photos.
