Angel – Sinful

Rating: C

Angel was discovered by Gene Simmons of Kiss and signed to the same label as the band, Casablanca.  The band never quite made it larger than life as both Simmons and Angel had hoped.  In fact, by 1979, the year Sinful was released, they had run their course and it was time to move on.

The band were never more commercial than they were on Sinful and the result is a very 1979 sounding record.  It is a tad goofy and very pomp, but then again, that was Angel’s thing.  The album, accidentally, really paved the way for the Hair Band era as “L.A. Lady” would sound very at home on a Poison record.

While there are no big hit singles on Sinful, one must admit, that even as dated as the album is, the sucker has a certain charm to it.  This album probably, in retrospect, should have been a much bigger hit than it was.  The guys still had the outfits, the hair and the chops to rock it out in a way that the guys could appreciate and the ladies loved.

Consisting of Frank DiMino on vocals, Punky Meadows on guitars, Felix Robinson on bass, Barry Brandt on drums and Gregg Giuffria on keyboards, Sinful was the end of both the decade and the true Angel band.

This one is worth rediscovering, falling somewhere in-between a good rock and roll album and a guilty pleasure.
